Sensitive K9 Tummies and How to Make Them Feel Better!

Sensitive K9 Tummies and How to Make Them Feel Better!

Has your pup ever given you the “I don’t feel so good” eyes after dinner? You’re not alone!

Some dog breeds are more prone to digestive drama than others. Certain breeds need a little extra TLC for mealtime, whether it’s bloating, food sensitivities or allergies, or just a delicate constitution.

Let’s dig into the breeds most likely to have sensitive tummies below (this is not an exhaustive list!) and how to make them feel better!

~ NOTE ~
Always remember, every dog is unique!
Not every breed listed below will experience digestive issues,
while other breeds (not listed below) can have a sensitive tummy!

🐾 Seven Breeds Notorious for Sensitive Tummies

  • German Shepherds: These loyal companions are known for their intelligence and versatility, but they are also prone to gastrointestinal issues, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and bloat. (Source: iHeartDogs.com)
  • Labrador Retrievers: Labs are enthusiastic eaters, sometimes too enthusiastic! Their tendency to eat anything and everything can lead to digestive issues. They’re also prone to food allergies and pancreatitis. (Our very own silver Labrador, Barkley, led to the creation of Marcy’s Pet Kitchen for his sensitive tummy!)
  • Yorkshire Terriers: Don’t let their small size fool you; Yorkies can have significant digestive issues! They’re susceptible to pancreatitis and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. (Source: HonestPaws.com)

  • Irish Setters: Setters may be sensitive to gluten, which can lead to chronic digestive issues. They're also at risk for bloat and megaesophagus, which affects the esophagus's ability to contract and move food into the stomach properly.
  • Shar-Peis: These wrinkly wonders are prone to a variety of digestive issues, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), food allergies, and a rare condition that affects Vitamin B12 absorption, resulting in a poor appetite and weight loss.
  • Miniature Schnauzers are at risk for pancreatitis, especially when fed a high-fat diet. This condition can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and lethargy.

🥣 How to Tame Tummy Troubles: Five Tips

If your dog is from one of the breeds above or has a sensitive stomach, below are five tips to help keep their digestion on track.

  • Choose easily digestible foods: Opt for diets with high-quality, lean proteins and limited ingredients to reduce the risk of food sensitivities.

  • Feed smaller, frequent meals: This can help prevent overeating and reduce the risk of bloat, especially in larger breeds.
  • Avoid table scraps and high-fat treats: Stick to dog-friendly treats low in fat and free from artificial additives.
  • Introduce new foods gradually: Sudden changes in diet can upset your dog’s stomach, so always transition slowly over several days.
  • Consult your vet: If digestive issues persist, consult your veterinarian. They may recommend a special diet.

🐶The Last Bark: The Bottom Line

Sensitive stomachs can be challenging for dog parents. But with proper care, attention, and knowledge, your dog can enjoy a happy and healthy life. Understanding your dog’s breed-specific needs and providing appropriate nutrition can make all the difference.
